著者簡介

V.S.奈保爾（V.S.Naipaul）：

英國著名作傢。1932年生於特立尼達島上一個印度移民傢庭，1950年進入牛津大學攻讀英國文學，畢業後遷居倫敦。

50年代開始寫作，著有《米格爾街》、《斯通先生與騎士夥伴》、《自由國度》、《河灣》、“印度三部麯”、《非洲的假麵劇》等。2001年，榮獲諾貝爾文學奬。

人上一百，形形色色。街鄰關係，這種對外人如此陌生的東西，奈保爾卻能夠找到一堆人身上的閃光點將他們的性格顯現齣來，令人印象極深。小說裏的遣詞造句真很“簡單”，比如一個“beat”往復齣現，卻能夠在上下文中獲得很精微的含義。在這些語法都不太通的街坊嘴裏蹦齣來粗糙的詞匯，非常生野，奈保爾就是能在有限的話語空間裏把情節延展得極為充分得體。另外，把十七個短篇串接起來的遠遠不止人物，還有頻頻齣現的地方元素，比如“calypso”，比如有些anti-America的情緒，這種重復保證瞭作品的圓融，同時也加深瞭一直麯摺的“眷戀”和“失落”。在最後一節，人物匯聚，故事收束，誤點的飛機，讓延宕的悲愴感久久迴蕩。

An unexpectedly delightful read. It's exotic but also universal. These people, u have so many reasons not to like them, they even constantly degrade themselves, yet u would think there's so much in common, and u start to feel for them before u even realize it. It seems that these people are pitiable, somehow, u just can't leave them behind. Amazing
