This title includes a reading guide. After years teaching Romantic poetry at the Technical University of Cape Town, David Lurie, middle-aged and twice divorced, has an impulsive affair with a student. The affair sours; he is denounced and summoned before a committee of inquiry. Willing to admit his guilt, but refusing to yield to pressure to repent publicly, he resigns and retreats to his daughter Lucy's isolated smallholding. For a time, his daughter's influence and the natural rhythms of the farm promise to harmonize his discordant life. But the balance of power in the country is shifting. He and Lucy become victims of a savage and disturbing attack which brings into relief all the faultlines in their relationship.
庫切(J. M. Coetzee, 1940―):南非當代著名小說傢,自1974年起,先後齣版瞭《幽暗之鄉》(Dusklands, 1974)、《國之中心》(In the Heart of the Country: A Novel, 1977)、《等待野蠻人》(Waiting for the Barbarians, 1980)、《邁剋爾・K.的生平與時代》(Life and Times of Michael K., 1983;獲1983年布剋奬)、《敵人》(Foe, 1986)、《鐵的時代》(Age of Iron, 1990),以及《彼得堡的主人》(The Master of Petersburg, 1994)等多部小說,被評論界認為是當代南非最重要的作傢之一。
becoming the dog || 乾淨!
Only great writers like Coetzee can write about disgrace in a manner both graceful and cruel for us common readers. Included in this tiny novel is the human nature that goes beyond what happens in South Africa, a kind of fate or "blessing" that both counts as grace and disgrace to the flawed mortals.
