史賓納利小時候想當一個牛仔，現在他是一個「作傢」。他於1982年齣版第一本小說《七年級太空站》，1991年以《馬尼亞剋傳奇》榮獲美國紐伯瑞兒童文學金獎，1998年再以《小殺手》榮獲紐伯瑞兒童文學銀獎。本書是他首次嘗試為低幼兒童所寫的童書。現在他與同樣也是「作傢」的妻子定居在美國賓州。
