Set in nineteenth-century England,

this is the story of a woman who refuses

a secure marriage with a kind and lov-

ing man, attracted as she is to the

memory of another--a handsome

stranger who rescued her years before

when she was lost in London.

As though preordained, this man ap-

pears again, at her presentation ball,

and a passionate love springs up be-

tween them, suddenly, like the fire

that turns the gala occasion into a sear-

ing tragedy. Again she is rescued, again

by the darkly haudsome stranger. And

so it continues, each meeting renewing

passion and setting the scene for new

and sinister events.

In the end, both will flee to the deso-

late moors of Dartmouth where, in a

lonely, menaeiug old estate, the an-

cient secrets that have guided his faro-
