<div>This book was originally written to help offset an error we had been making</div>

<div>as teachers. We had been giving our undergraduate students， our master's</div>

<div>students (in a professional program)， and our doctoral students (in a re-</div>

<div>search program) the same type of introduction to social science research. All</div>

<div>were taught from a researcher's point of view. Such a perspective is appro-</div>

<div>priate for those few students who will actually do research， but we had</div>

<div>become convinced that it was not the best perspective for the many who</div>
