Nearly fifty years ago the Battle of Britain entered

its phase of mass incendiary raids as, night after

night, German bombers smashed at the heart of

London. For long months in daylight the Germans

had fought to break the back of the English in the

heaviest aerial attacks ever known in warfare. The

skill and determination of a handful of young British

fighter pilots in their agile Spitfires and Hurricanes

doomed that attempt to failure.
