Peter Burke is a fellow of Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge. His books include Eyewitnessing: The Uses of Images as Historical Evidence, also from Cornell; The European Renaissance: Centres and Peripheries; and A Social History of Knowledge from Gutenberg to Diderot.

It provides some basic tools, concepts, and problems in social history and historical sociology, but without insights.

該去年上課之前就讀的。是簡明易讀的曆史社會學索引性質讀物，尤其是不拘泥於某一範式或某一傳統的研究，涉獵之廣令人發指，要做筆記的話大概可以把全書大部分內容都抄下來。當然，其中少數我知道的研究，在這本書中的呈現還是有些過於簡略，意圖做社會學和曆史學雙嚮傳聲筒卻感覺有點做成瞭單嚮。無論如何，能將紛繁復雜甚至不乏奇葩的研究以相對清晰的思路整理下來，這種貢獻值得敬佩。
