This overview of the life cycle of information, and the role of library professionals as change agents, includes the role of a professional as diagnostician of information needs. The four common characteristics shared by information professionals draw upon information transfer theory, which is based on models of communication theory. The infrastructure of the information professions and current trends and issues are discussed in the context of the cycle of professional service including the processes and functions of information professionals.
