作者是曾经跟踪报道克林顿竞选团队的记者。书里的Stanton夫妇就是Clinton夫妇。书里的情节有很多都能和克林顿竞选时发生的事情对得上，但又更不可思议点。然而无论书里的情节是否是真的，尤其是克林顿本人的私生活丑闻（莱温斯基与竞选期间的故事简直小巫见大巫了），都不重要，小说最成功的地方是生动描述了克林顿夫妇，即使故事不是真的，读者也能想象到真正的克林顿夫妇如果真的遇到这些事，那反应就会是书里所写那样。纸牌屋第一季就是依据这本最著名的政治小说之一而拍摄的。
